Emergency is a 2025 Indian Hindi-language historical biographical drama film directed and co-produced by Kangana Ranaut. The screenplay was written by Ritesh Shah, and the story was penned by Ranaut herself. The film is based on the Indian Emergency and stars Ranaut as former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi.
After India's independence, Indira Gandhi is informed about the war of Indrapastha and the struggle for power in the portrayal of modern-day India. Following this, a quick montage unfolds, highlighting her efforts to protect Assam and her rise to the top of the Congress party.
Initially, she is seen as someone who could be used as a puppet. However, after defying the Syndicate's wishes to halt Operation Searchlight and negotiating with major world powers, she gains the support of Vajpayee's opposition, ultimately weakening the inner-party resistance.
Her triumph in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 sparks an "Indira wave," where she is hailed as the Durga of India and enjoys widespread popular support. However, she faces setbacks when a court case in Allahabad forces her to resign from her position. Paranoid about the opposition's tactics against her and her party, she ultimately decides to declare an Emergency.
